Attorney General Tong Joins Coalition Defending Authority to Enforce Fraud Law Against President Trump
10/30/2026
(Hartford, CT) – Attorney General William Tong joined a coalition of 17 states in urging the New York Court of Appeals to reject an argument by Donald Trump that could weaken the ability of state attorneys general to hold businesses and individuals accountable for fraud.
Connecticut joined an amicus brief in the civil fraud case New York brought against Donald Trump and his co-defendants, who were accused of inflating the values of assets to obtain better terms on loans and insurance rates.
Trump and his co-defendants argue that New York should not have brought the case because the banks and insurance companies involved were sophisticated financial institutions that did not raise concerns about being defrauded. In the brief, the coalition warns that siding with this argument could weaken the ability of states attorneys general across the country from enforcing fraud laws and protecting the public.
“Fraud is fraud, whether you’re cheating an individual or a multibillion-dollar bank. State attorneys general have clear authority to stop fraud and hold perpetrators accountable, no matter how rich or powerful they are. No one is above the law, including Donald Trump,” said Attorney General Tong.
State attorneys general play a critical role in protecting consumers from business and individuals that engage in fraud and deceptive practices. Laws in Connecticut allow the Attorney General to take action against fraudulent and deceptive business practices, even when those directly involved do not file complaints. This prevents businesses and individuals from using deception to gain unfair advantages and drive up costs for consumers.
Attorney General Tong joined this brief alongside the attorneys general of Arizona, California, Delaware, Hawaiʻi, Illinois, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, Oregon, Vermont, Virginia, and Washington.
